Kids' graduation gowns in bulk: why adult patterns cannot be scaled down
Buying regalia for a kindergarten or primary school usually starts with “just scale the adult pattern down”. It does not work: heights inside one year group can differ by 20 cm, and a scaled pattern puts the shoulder line in the wrong place. A height-band sizing table, two extra fabric and trim checks, and a pre-order list.
Two things decide whether a children's order works out: how the sizes are set, and whether the fabric and trim need separate requirements. Neither can be carried over from the adult range.
Start with the conclusion: children's gowns cannot be scaled proportionally from adult sizes — each height band needs its own pattern. When you request a quote, the height distribution matters more than the colour.

Pattern is the most underestimated item. Adult proportions sit close enough together that grading a single block up and down stays within tolerance. A 6-year-old and a 10-year-old differ in shoulder, waist and leg-length ratios — scale proportionally and the shorter children get gowns that pool on the floor with sleeves past their hands, while the taller ones get a gown that binds at the shoulder.
Set sizes from the height distribution, not from S/M/L
Do not order S/M/L. Collect the height distribution per class first, then summarise it against a table like this one so the factory can build patterns to the actual spread:

Two practical notes:
- Do not size up to allow for growth. Ceremonies usually fall at the end of term, so sizing up makes the gown fit worse on the day. If you genuinely need headroom, ask the factory for an adjustable sleeve and hem instead.
- Order every size band in one go. Reordering a single kids size band costs far more than for adults, because the line has to be set up again.
Fabric and trim: two extra checks for children's orders
The usual uniform-fabric assumptions need adjusting:
- Keep the weight down. Children are more active and a summer ceremony can run past two hours; anything above 200 gsm becomes noticeably uncomfortable. A matte polyester at 160–180 gsm holds its shape while staying breathable.
- Subtract trim, do not add it. Tassels, ties and buttons should be fixed or integrated where possible; tassel length should stay within the safe range. This is the single most common audit point on kindergarten projects.
- Certification has to attach to the fabric. Chemical requirements are stricter for children's products than for adults. Ask for a test report that covers the actual fabric lot; we normally offer fabric options covered by OEKO-TEX 100.
What a complete children's set contains
A typical children's graduation set carries more small components than the adult version:
- Gown
- Mortarboard with tassel
- Hood or stole (colour-coded by class in most projects)
- Certificate cover or diploma tube
- Bow tie or necktie (required by some kindergartens)
- Class identifier (embroidery or print, on request)
If you want the ceremony photos to look coherent, colour-code the stole by class and keep the gown body uniform. Class groups stay readable at a glance and the photos avoid a patchwork of colours.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum order quantity for children's gowns?
The same as our standard orders — 50 pieces. Sample orders have no minimum, so you can approve a single sample first. This matters more for children's regalia than for adult, because pattern differences are much more visible.
How long does sampling take?
Usually 7–14 days. Multiple height bands or several rounds of revision will extend this.
How does kindergarten buying differ from primary school buying?
Kindergarten orders tend to be smaller with a tighter height spread and more accessories. Primary schools crossing several year groups need four or more size bands and more often want class colour-coding. Both benefit from ordering by height band rather than one size per year group.
Can we colour-code the stole by class?
Yes. It is one of the most common customisations on children's regalia — a different stole colour per class or year with a uniform gown body keeps ceremony photos tidy.
What documentation do we need for fabric safety?
Children's projects normally need a fabric test report covering chemical requirements. We can supply the report for the relevant production lot; if you need a specific standard, tell us at enquiry stage.
How long does bulk production take?
It has to be confirmed per order: quantity, number of size bands, trim complexity and whether the order falls in the spring peak all affect scheduling. Give us the ceremony date first and we will work backwards from it.
